Presente dei verbi in -ire

Present of -ire verbs
Verbs ending in -ire can follow two patterns:
  1. standard -ire verbs (e.g.,partire, to leave): add endings like -o, -i, -e, -iamo, -ite, -ono.
  2. -isc- verbs (e.g., capire, to understand): insert -isc- in all forms except noi and voi.
-isc- verbs aren't so many but since there isn’t a clear rule to determine whether an -ire verb follows the standard pattern or the -isc- pattern, memorization is the most reliable method.

Here is a list of common -isc- verbs frequently used in everyday speech:

Preferire: to prefer
(Io preferisco, tu preferisci, lui / lei preferisce...)

Finire: to finish
(Io finisco, tu finisci, lui / lei finisce...)

Pulire: to clean
(Io pulisco, tu pulisci, lui / lei pulisce...)

Costruire: to build
(Io costruisco, tu costruisci, lui / lei costruisce...)

Spedire: to send
(Io spedisco, tu spedisci, lui / lei spedisce...)
