Il presente dei verbi in -are

Present of -are Verbs
Italian verbs are organized into three distinct families, called conjugations, based on their infinitive endings: -are, -ere, and -ire. Think of these endings as a "membership card" that indicates exactly how a verb behaves once it is used in a sentence.
THE FIRST CONJUGATION: -ARE

The -are conjugation, featuring verbs like parlare (to speak, to talk), is the largest and most predictable group. Because the pattern is so consistent, mastering a single -are verb effectively unlocks the ability to use thousands of others. This conjugation is remarkably regular, making it the most straightforward group to learn and apply across a vast range of vocabulary.

To conjugate a regular verb of the first conjugation, first remove the letters -are from the infinitive to find the stem:
  • infinitive: parlare
  • stem: parl-
Then, simply add the following endings to the stem according to the subject: -o, -i, -a, -iamo, -ate, -ano
